In general, the finest grit should be used to achieve the desired results. Should coarser grit be necessary, it is important to revert only one grit level.

Example: When working towards a #6 architectural finish, if fine non-woven belt is not cutting a correct finish, one should revert to a 240 grit aluminum oxide then proceed back to fine, non woven.
