NFPA Code brackets
NFPA 101 has a different clearance requirement for handrail than does the IBC, ADA and ANSI. Their requirement is that there is to be a 2-1/2″ minimum clearance between the wall and the handrail. Confirm with your local Authority Having Jurisdiction as to whether your installation needs to meet NFPA requirements — generally required for railings along fire exit routes.
Note: Many jurisdictions have modified this requirement to 1-1/2″ when adopted. Contact your local authority having jurisdiction to verify.
