How do I maintain brass or stainless steel finishes?

There are many commercially available cleaners that you can purchase to maintain your metal finishes. You can purchase stainless steel cleaner — available in aerosol cans — at just about any hardware store. Just follow label directions for its use. In an exterior application, an occasional water rinse should be enough to keep the material from collecting dirt and potential corrosives. Remember, stainless steel is corrosion resistant not corrosion-proof. Under certain conditions — salt spray, ferrous contamination or air polutants — stainless steel will corrode. Occasional cleaning will prevent this from happening.

The brass can be cleaned and maintained with our Lido Lustre polish. This will remove finger prints and tarnish while leaving a protective coating to slow down later tarnishing. Lido Lustre will also clean stainless steel but the aerosol cleaner is more convenient. Lido Lustre is sold at most Home Depots but similar brass cleaner/polishes such as “Flitz” are available at most hardware stores.

Never, never, never use any abrasive cleaner, Scotchbrite, or steel wool to clean any of these metals. They will scratch the surface.
